[The BFG] Snozzcumbers taste like regular cucumbers

In Roald Dahl's classic story "The BFG" the only food available in giant-land that isn't people is the nine-to-twelve foot long snozzcumber, which the BFG is forced to eat because he doesn't want to eat humans. Sophie, a young child says the snozzcumber tastes like "frogskin and rotten fish" and the BFG says it tastes like "cockroaches and slime wanglers."

I'd be willing to theorize that the snozzcumbers taste just like regular cucumbers. The only people who have tried them and commented on the taste are Sophie, a young girl who shouldn't be expected to like the taste of vegetables, the BFG who is rather immature himself, and the other giants who are equally lacking in maturity. It'd make sense that giants, or at the very least giants other than the BFG who are used to the meaty, and apparently delicious taste of humans would detest the flavor of a cucumber. And the BFG has giant taste buds, so it's likely the abhorrence to the flavor of a cucumber is inherited.

Since nobody in the book aside from a young child and some giants were able to try a snozzcumber, it's reasonable to expect that the snozzcumber being absolutely repulsive was a humorous subversion on Roald Dahl's part, making fun of how young children are repulsed by certain foods, and not just meant to be a convenient plot device.

I initially misread this as snozzberries and was confused, then remembered having read this book and made the rather pleasant connection that those are both things in 2 different books by the same author.

I think this seems fairly solid, except cucumbers are really just rather bland more than anything else.

I have two younger brothers who think cucumbers taste absolutely vile. I don't like them much myself but I understand they're just watery and not that gross. It's peculiar. But there's just something about them that elicits a horrible reaction among some people (mostly picky eaters and kids).

More support for the theory then :D

IIRC: There's a chemical found on the outside of the cucumber that makes it taste horrible to some people, and just fine to others.

Haha, I misread another part and was thinking "why are the BFG's taste buds larger than normal?"

But yeah, solid theory OP.

Back when these books were written to call someone a "snozz" is the same as calling someone a "dick" or "cock". So cock flavored cucumbers and penis flavored wallpaper. These are children's books.
