So did Dany stop giving a shit about slaves?

She reopened the fighting pits but never changed her stance on slavery, even in the show they repeated that they wanted the fighting pits opened for only free men to fight each other and she refuses.

Then she reopens the fighting pits and in ep7 she attends a fight at a smaller pit with slaves.

So did they totally forget that Dany was anti-slavery and just kept on writing without her changing her stance on the subject?

Wouldn't heads roll if she found out the pit masters were still buying slaves and forcing them to fight?

After Tyrion is sold, the slave owner throws him a coin which he states represents Tyrion's life wages. The slaves in the fighting pits are presented as free employees, but they are actually free in name only.

Can they keep that lie up?

Probably not, but it's a great way to show that Dany needs someone with political acumen to help her have her ideals become reality.

...on that note she probably shouldn't kill Tyrion.

Just long enough to use it as a plot device.

She doesn't know they were bought at and auction. Also, technically Tyrion and Jorah are free, just with a shitty lifelong contract.

Probably, but remember they did pay Jorah and Tyrion a wage. A shitty wage but a wage nonetheless. Technically at least those two aren't slaves. I don't know about the others although but I'm sure at least a few of them are legit slaves.

This is a really great point about the last episode that totally wooshed past me as I was watching it.

She has high ideals, but she lays down the law and people just find a way to keep on doing what they want. The way that he gives them a tiny worthless coin is indicative of Dany's inability to rule effectively at this point.

Which is good, because we need some strong narrative reason for Tyrion to be a serious asset to her.

I mean they were chained up right before all this, couldn't Jorah have just mentioned he was bought as a slave and his owner would be fucked? It seems like a really big thing to just gloss over.

No, not really. He was paid a wage. I mean I suppose he could lie about the wage and it would be his word against theirs. I'm not sure who Dany would believe in that particular situation. Basically the slavers are able to get around all of Dany's slavery laws by just throwing a coin at their slaves. Barristan tried to warn her of that very thing last season.

By that logic, any of the slaves paid fighters could just throw back the coin and walk away. They're clearly still slaves, but if she really pushes the issue, the whole plan to bring back the fighting pits and appease the Merennese falls apart.

Exactly. Her hold on Mereen is very fragile right now.

He did show up in chains.

Those are just, uh, um, a formality. You see, they've been paid to fight already and even brave men fear death. We have to be sure that they actually complete the job they've been paid for. We have to protect our financial interests.

Loophole. The slaver pays him once.

I don't think Dany would see it the same way if she knew.

True, but it might have to get through a lot of layers of active resistance to reporting to get to her.

They were like three feet from her and could say they were captured and auctioned as slaves, I think she'd believe it.

Well, that is true. Obviously Jorah and Tyrion are idiots who care about themselves first and others sometimes. For now, until and unless next episode has them telling her. If they do, then it's more making sure they have her attention and securing their safety before telling her very important things.

A slave can be paid for the work and remain a slave.

As others pointed out, Tyrion and Jorah got paid (and I think it's the same for the others). But wasn't there a scene in the show where Dany said to a former slave who wants to enter back into the services of his old master that he needs to have a contract that establishes the rules of this engagement? This is at least something she could use to check if they are slaves or not (of course, you can always force someone to sign a contract).

Sadly I may be mixing my book and show memories, but she did decree that one can enter a contract like that but the duration of the contract may not be longer than a year.
