[Pokémon Yellow] Need advice on how the Speed stat works and how to best improve it.

I want a Porygon in my team, but it's rather slow. It has the possibility to learn Agility, but I'd rather stick to its other attacks.

My question is: Can I get the Speed stat up enough with the help of Carbos, or will I need Agility to get some decent speed?

Extra: The current attacks I'm going for are: Tri Attack, Recover, Conversion and Psybeam. I'll get it to forget Recover if Agility would be essential for decent speed.

There are EV points in pokemon yellow, red and blue. Though they work differently. I'm not sure the numbers exactly, but they work just like EV's do now. A certain amount of points gives you a bonus point in that stat. Max amount of points added is 64 i think.Anyhow, each pokemon you beat gives you points in each stat based on the defeated pokemons base stats. So beating a magikarp gives you 20 hp points, 10 attack points, 55 defense points, 15 special points, and 80 speed points.

Anyhow, [there is a link on bulbapedia that explains it much better than i can. It's in the stat experience section] (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Effort_values#Stat_experience)

Edit: To answer your question, Porygon has a base speed of 40 back in yellow i believe. So he isn't going to be that fast, though the range of fast pokemon back then are much smaller. If I were you, to take advantage of speed better, run faster pokemon with Slash. The crit chance was based on speed back then, so a faster pokemon had a better crit chance.

Thank you!

So giving Carbos to Porygon is a waste? And is Agility a waste as well?

Not that it's a waste, it is just that he's one of the pokemon that will have a much harder time using it effectively.
