8 out of 116 people they made contact with were hit with open container laws. That's 6.9% of the population. There were more people illegally parked.
Unless the 8 people drinking are harming you or other people, I really don't see what the big deal is. Most of them are there to unwind and enjoy themselves, same as you.

So this only measures the "contacts" that they had, which I would assume would be a cop saying something to someone, and not just them seeing someone. I think it's awesome that only 8 people were given a ticket, because I can guarantee they saw more than 8 people drinking.
Yeah, a contact is when the police have a conversation with someone (friendly or not), and I guess it's good that only 8 people got tickets.
And thank goodness for those parking citations. How would we ever be safe again without them?
Safe I don't know so much about, but the single handicapped parking spot in the lot at Belle Island? That my friend, I can speak about.
I can say in the more than 7 years I have been visiting Belle Isle I have seen handicapped plates (other than mine) three times. I have been unable to park there more than a dozen times because some jerkface was parked in the one spot and not displaying tags or hanger.
So I, for one, can get behind the police issuing parking tickets there.
If that's what they were issuing tickets for, I'm on board 100%, but I highly doubt that would generate over 100 parking tickets. If it did then there are even more dickheads going to the river than I originally suspected.
My suspicion is most of the tickets were probably issued on the south side. They'd have to be tricky to get 100 tickets off the parking lot by Tredegar.
I wonder if the person that originally complained ended up getting a parking ticket...
Haha, I hope so.
if you're dumb enough to get caught with an open container you deserve the ticket. how hard is it to keep that shit inconspicuous?
the asshats who would get caught are probably the same asshats who are doing the littering. fools who clearly DGAF. hope they enjoy the fine.
it IS against the law and, ya know, good cops enforce the law
A cop maybe should be there. He/she should keep an eye out for disorderly people and littering. Not crack down on anyone who wants to go chill at the river with a 6 pack. There is typically a pretty clear line between people who are being responsible and those who aren't (maybe that line is 8 out of 116, I dunno).
I think they should crack down on anyone with glass containers.
And anyone who litters.
And anyone who stabs someone with a knife, spits on a turtle, and then slashes the tires of parked vehicles while singing Harry Belafonte.
Dammit Moose, that was an accident and you know it! Stop bringing back up into my face please!!!
And cyclists!
I'd definitely be fine with that.
This is just gonna push more goobers out to the less accessible areas of the river where they'll be just as much of a nuisance. This is essentially the fat people hate of JRPS. At least before I knew where to go in order to avoid the dregs and the cops.
Put booze in backpack, wade to island off pipeline rapids, fend off herons in a drunken rage...sounds kinda fun.
I know this was in jest, but that is an absolutely horrible idea. Don't give them any more reason not to roost there.
Now I'm just imagining somebody filling up their camelback with liquor.
you mean you haven't? A screwdriver in a camelback is great, or so I've been told.
I imagine this could be either revolutionary or a fucking disaster. I'm willing to study it. For science, you know.
The cops will be at the pipeline sooner or later. It's easily accessible. Plus probably lots of opportunity for parking ticket revenue from the nearby lot.
The parts near the pipeline are easily accessible, but the island requires a quick swim or a wade through uneven riverbed and waist-high water. Then you crawl through brambles and over rocks to get anywhere. I doubt the cops will ever go to the jumping rock.
YOU SHOULDN'T BE GOING TO THE HERON ISLAND! Damn it.
And it's probably easier to go down the tracks, use the ladder, and go across there.
“I guess safety is always good but I’ve never felt like there was anything weird going on here,” Callie Hlavin, a Belle Isle visitor said.
I can tell who hasn't been followed around by the guy who kept getting nude and reading his book...but was really just staring at a group of us. We'd move, he'd pack up and follow. Good times.
There seem to be weirdos everywhere. The guy in Short Pump (?) taking pictures up women's dresses int he grocery store....the guy that exposed himself....
Ran down there this AM picked up a slew of bottles, with everyone I thought "parenting" that's the only justification I can come up with.
don't get me wrong, the littering bothers me. But if they had soda cans instead of beer cans, they'd probably still be littering.
So nice reporting, they talked about the RPD video, but didn't provide a link...

Wow we went from one of the most violent cities in America to small PNW town, apparently.
I bumped into a pair of cops Saturday at Texas Beach. They were cool and just made anyone with an open beer go home or stay and receive a ticket.

I don't understand the mentality of the littering. Even when I was a young asshat I always took my empty (generally alcoholic) out with me. This Wednesday at Texas Beach the amount of beer cans left on one rock was alarming.
They can't see a trashcan within 20 feet of them..."eh, I'll clean it up later." They put it down, and it's out of their minds.
It's really just seems to be obliviousness/ignorance to their surroundings and themselves.
