Sigh this is why everyone who plays CSGO and has some sort of value in their inventory needs to at least browse reddit once in a while to learn of all these hijackers/scam tactics. The classic "never download anything from a random link a random guy sends you".
All your friend can do now is to write in to steam support and keep his fingers crossed. Provide as much evidence as possible in forms of screenshots.
This, just get all the evidence you can and send to steam it's up to them now
Yep, honestly idk how someone falls for this sort of thing, but it happens apparently :/

Good lord everytime someone tries this on me I ask myself who on earth falls for this. Sucks for your friend but all he can do is go into support, hopefully he got some screenshots of the chat etc. If my computer ever started moving / doing things in its own it'd be straight off at the plug!

He got phished. That dumb csgo tournament, download this link thing is one of the oldest in the book. Did he have his email confirmation for steam on? If not I think he is SOL :(
I know lol. I thought someone did an email hack or something when he told me he got hacked. I was facepalming through my skull when he told me the tournament link thing. He said the guy was global elite, but honestly that doesnt make a difference.
It blows mind that someone can have a 3k inv without knowing the easy scams
