It's time to talk T-38.
No, this isn't a shitpost about how bad it is.
This post is pretty much the opposite.
I LOVE this little thing. I might actually like it better than the T-26!
Now, it has obvious flaws - the gun depression is pretty bad, the armor is very weak, there's no secondary gunner, and the main gun can't penetrate much with standard ammo.
This doesn't make it a bad tank though. The little T-38 can be an effective little bastard when played correctly.
This tank is an infantry hunter. It can be capable of ambushing armor, but the core idea of this tank is to spot enemy tanks and obliterate enemy infantry.
Sometimes you can get easy kills by just sitting still near an infantry chokepoint and blasting away. I sat in an area for about two minutes and rounded up seven infantry kills. They were easy to get, too. The T-38's small profile means they are less likely to notice you, so you can stay in one spot if there are no enemy tanks and blast away at them, making sure they don't get to the front lines to make trouble for your infantry. 1 2
You can engage enemy armor if you get the drop on them, and you will have the most success if you attack their weak side armor. In that picture, I was pretty much hiding in plain sight, right beside the bridge head on the spawn side. He only noticed me and got off a few shots before I finished him off. You do need to watch out though, as this is a common tank tactic, so you might walk into another tank's trap just like I did.
But by far the greatest thing about this tank is how much people underestimate it. All the people complaining about it has pretty much made it a joke in the game. This poor guy tried pretty much through the whole game to penetrate my armor and destroy me with nothing but his default rifle and anti infantry grenades. Every now and then I'd turn my turret and see a German soldier there right beside my tank unloading his rifle into my turret.
It was so funny.
But if you play this tank:
-
As an infantry hunter - making the enemy infantry your absolute top priority
-
Scout - look for the heavier tanks and spot them for the rest of your team. Most other light tanks are fair game, but someone else needs to take care of the bigger ones.
-
Ambush predator - always stay hidden or at least out of the enemy's direct line of sight. If you are in an area with lots of enemy tanks, try to move your position after every few kills. Needle the enemy to death, don't try and crush them with brute force - leave that to the mediums.
-
With a good head on your shoulders - always think about your next move and be smart about engaging targets. You need to look at where you are sitting, how your armor is angled (not that it matters too much, but it will deflect fire from the M2A2 when angled), and what level your enemies will be on so you can adjust your tank's position to get it within range of the gun depression.
You will do just fine. It's a pretty good little tank, guys. Just give it a chance and I'm sure you will grow to like it too.
