Question about the nature of the Workout/Fitness aspect of Kayaking

I am looking at a 15.6 Touring Kayak to buy from a friend. I've never Kayaked.

I am most interested in the exercise quality of getting out there. I don't do gyms, I like to bike and hike instead. I think this would be a good idea for me.

Considering that, I am most interested in working out the "core" of my body. As in the center of my body, my abs, and heck the back is a bonus I guess. Will kayaking make me sore in those areas?

Oh and of course I like the workout of the soul aspect.

When paddling correctly, the entire body should be engaged, especially the core. Do a quick search on Google or YouTube for "the kayaking forward stroke" and you'll see how much emphasis goes into using all major muscle groups, rather than "bicycling" your hands and only using biceps.

It is truly a great workout and it's up to you how much you want to push each time you're on the water.

Just like biking or hiking in beautiful areas, kayaking allows you to work your body in a truly beautiful setting (if you have access to it) and the sound of the water and wildlife always helps.

One thing to mention though, kayaks have to fit your body very well. You should only buy your friend's boat if you two share a very similar build. Otherwise I recommend you find a boat that fits you, and will do what you want to get out of it.

Cheers!
