One every 4 seconds.

Every four seconds, someone dies of starvation.

We have more than enough food to feed the world. We have more than enough arable land to feed the world. But feeding the world isn't profitable. Foodstuffs like rice, wheat, beans, soy, and the solid base of a vegetarian diet could easily feed the world with fewer resources than we are using now.

But corn is profitable. Beef is profitable. They may not be as nutritious, and they may take more resources than beans, but they are profitable. Because they are profitable, it is what is produced.

Going off cost alone: the United Nations estimates it would take $30 billion a year to feed the world's hungry. The United States' advertising industry accounts for $180 billion a year. The United States spent $737 billion in 2012 on defense spending alone.

In the time it took to write this, 68 people died. In the time you take to read this, 14 people died.

This is why capitalism is toxic, and must be smashed. I have no illusions of a perfect socialist utopia, where no one is sick and no one is ever hungry. What I do understand, and what even a child could understand when couched in these terms, is that capitalists do not produce for a purpose (use-value). They produce for a profit (exchange-value). As long as production continues for this purpose, whether owned by the workers (market socialism) or by capitalists (ya know...capitalism), you can mark a death every four seconds.
