[EVENT] Papal Condemnation of both the Dutch Confederation and Emperor Maximilian I
Julius sat at his desk mulling over the news of war against the Dutch by Emperor Maimilian I. Aid's from both the Confederation and the Emperor had been summoned to Rome to meet with Julius personally to avoid war. Alas twas not to be, the Confederation refused to dissolve and the Emperor refused to give way to other concessions.
A letter sat before Julius, ink stained and worn at the edges. "I want this circulated throughout the Empire." He spoke softly and with purpose, anger got you nowhere in diplomacy.
"I Julius II, chosen by God to represent men on this Earth must condemn the war between the Dutch Confederation and the Emperor. It personally saddens me that both sides were too stubborn to come to a compromise that would avert this war. The Emperor acts within the law, but I question whether a softer hand would have yielded the same results. The Dutch Confederation broke sovereign laws of the Empire and exchanged in hostile rhetoric that exasperated the situation we now find ourselves in. I pray that God will guide the souls of men lost in this conflict, and urge both sides to show clemency to the no-combatants caught in the middle of this conflict. Signed by the grace of God, Julius II."
