Trying to cancel movers - can I be charged anything?
I'm moving in about a week. The other day I asked the company to provide proof of their licensure (stupidly I should have done this before booking them), and the owner honestly explained that they were not licensed. Upon this discovery, I emailed him back thanking him for his honesty and stating that I would be more comfortable going with another company for my move. I didn't sign anything with them, nor did I give them a deposit. All there is is an email exchange with the estimate and my acceptance/booking of the company.
Since then, however, I have not received a confirmation of the cancellation from the company. I texted the owner asking if he had received my cancellation request, and I have not received an answer. My question is, would he be able to charge me a cancellation fee if I did not provide a deposit and if I was not made aware of a cancellation policy? (There is not one listed on the website either).
Also, is it possible that he could come to my house anyways, claim that I was a No Show, and come after me in some way? I fear that there might be some legal recourse for my cancellation.
A part of me is sure that he has read my email (he usually would reply to them in a somewhat timely manner) and received my text message. I plan on calling him again tomorrow, but I am a little nervous about what is going on.
Any advice is appreciated!
