Can you disable icon tiles and alphabetical sorting tiles in Start Menu programs list?

These new "features" make scrolling through the Programs List needlessly painful. Are there any settings to revert back to a simpler programs list where entries only take up a single line and don't have the stupid alphanumeric tiles that break-up each section? Also, is there a way to have sub-menus in the programs list slide-out horizontally rather than cascading vertically?

It's driving me crazy and I can't seem to find anything in my internet searches. Please don't tell me I have to install ClassicShell again to have such basic functionality...
