Help! I'm transphobic and I'm having a hard time dealing with it.... I'm also a transgirl on HRT for a year and a half... (Trigger warning: transphobia)
I've been a part of this community for a while and I love it here. Everyone is amazing and supportive and pretty much rocking. I was hoping maybe someone had a perspective that would help me "get over" this transphobia I have or whatever it is. So, here's the situation:
I've been having a LOT of trouble with pre-HRT transgirls calling themselves lesbians. I see them here, on r/mtf, on r/actuallesbians and other subs I frequent. It doesn't make sense to me. Testosterone and estrogen are very different in terms of how they affect the body, and it's pretty much understood that the brain changes as well when exposed to them. One of the things that changes as well can be sexuality. It makes no sense to me that Pre-HRT transgirls can be lesbians. They might identify as female, but until they've got estrogen running through their veins it doesn't make any sense to me. Testosterone is still alive and well, it's making its presence known... Hell, it's an androgen! It's quite literally the "male" hormone. Yeah the argument can be made that you've got some amount of estrogen coming in as well, but it most likely isn't dominant yet. That's why the whole HRT thing exists, right? Swap the hormones, get the feminizing characteristics, get the brain what it actually needs to develop female like it shoulda been to begin with.
Whether we like it or not, male and female really are societal constructs, and there are certain criteria that need to be met in order to meet the requirements. That's why "passing" has so many little nuances to it, where you reach that critical threshold of more female to male, or male to female characteristics.
So yeah, that's about the gist of it. It just bugs me that pre-HRT transgirls identify as lesbians when it feels like they haven't met the criteria yet. To some degree it just feels like wishful thinking and they definitely don't have a lesbian "lived experience" yet. Consequently, I don't feel like they're part of the community yet.
This isn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings or call them out... Quite the opposite, I feel like a bigot and transphobic and I honestly don't want to be. I'm not sure why I'm so hard on my fellow transgirls when I've been through the same struggles as them.
Edit: Thanks for all the replies everyone and it's made me think. Pre-HRT trans people are usually in a bad place. But they're also in a happier one than they used to be. They have a lot of dysphoria, they've got a lot of mismatching going on and life is pretty terrible in a lot of ways. But the bright side is, they've got something to hold on too. They ARE "insert preferred gender here."
It might not mean a lot, but it means something to them. And they're missing a lot of lived life experiences, and that's okay. Maybe they'll learn something about themselves later. As far as they know, if they liked girls before making the decision to transition and they were a guy, they were straight. If they're a girl, and they still like girls, that makes them a lesbian. It's straightforward and doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. Will they have trouble in a lesbian community? Maybe. Things might be awkward. Does it mean they really are whatever they are? Who knows. People are wrong about shit all the time.
