50,000 Subscribers
If you're like us, you've been looking at that subscriber counter for the last couple of days slowly raising your eyebrow higher and higher. Well, it happened. 50,000 subscribers. Thats a significant milestone.
It's been a crazy ride since 40k and an even crazier ride since 10k. Astrophotography used to be a small niche hobby, barely known outside of the photography and astronomy community. It was seemingly a closely kept secret that any old Joe could go out and take a photo of a galaxy. Well that's all changed. Along the journey to 50k, we've seen astrophotography all over the front page of Reddit and other media. Countless Redditors have flocked to r/astrophotography wanting to know more, wanting to get in on the now not-so-secret branch of photography. Astrophotography is back and growing in a big way.
What we're proud of
Perhaps the biggest indicator of the growth of the hobby has been our weekly WAAT threads. The threads provide a perfect place for newbies to ask questions, and get advice. When it first started, we were amazed at the 100+ comments. "There's no way they keep this up." we thought. Oh how wrong we were. The WAAT thread has consistently gotten over 100 comments each week since it was introduced. That's A LOT of newbies! We're proud to say that we are one of, if not the internet's biggest astrophotography communities.
The Future
We hope that as this subreddit continues to grow, the hobby will grow with it. However, with great numbers come great problems as we all know. Too many subreddits have fallen to the classic Reddit curse of "too many subscribers." I'm optimistic though. Whether you're just here to look at other people's work, to get advice, to share your work, or to nerd out... There will always be a community here for you, regardless of our size. All this being said... We have rules. Read them, follow them. That big red text box that appears at the top of the screen isn't a suggestion.
We're always looking at new features and new ideas for the subreddit. If you have any suggestions don't be afraid to message us. We've got some fun stuff in the pipeline, so stay tuned.
