(CA) Easy question regarding taking a driver to small claims

I was in an auto collision with another driver. I have liabilty insurance. His insurance company finds me at fault.

I want to know if I have to still inform him that I intend to take him to small claims for my damages over the collision before I file the case? I mean, I was contesting all along with his insurance company that he was at fault and not me, and the company denied it all so what would be the point?
