Apple EarPods buttons won't work with Ipad Air 2 (IOS 8.4) but works with Samsung Galaxy S5?

So I got my moms EarPods because she never use them, and she never used the buttons and possibly only plugged it into her iPhone 4 once. So I have a blast with them using my SGS5, but when I plugged them into my iPad Air 2 the buttons wouldn't work anymore! Instead of pausing and changing volume it just sort of stopped the music for a bit and then the music resumed.

Any help?
