Any tips on analyzing a heap dump?

I have a heap dump from when an application got stuck in what looked to be a gc spin and wasn't ever able to recover. Both memory and cpu hit the max allotted or available. I've looked at jhat and eclipse mat for analysis but am having a hard time pinpointing the problem with my limited understanding (not a Java developer). Are there any free recommend tools for analysing the dump?
