[WSIG] Games for up to 30 people to encourage conversation at a wedding reception

WSIG

A very good friend of mine is getting married in September and he and his wife are planning to have a collection of board games at the reception as opposed to the usual bar and dance given the personalities of the guests. They've asked me for some recommendations for board games that will help get people talking and having fun. Of the 30 people who will be attending, very few of them will know each other as most people's connection is only to the bride and groom. On top of this the bride's side of the guestlist (15 people) is mainly from Korea and while communication shouldn't be much of an issue, anything relying on North American pop culture won't really work, which can cause issues with several party games (e.g. Monikers). We're really trying not to have the event devide down the middle between his side and hers so anything that gets people interacting is a good idea.

Number of Players: There will be 30 people at the wedding. The plan is to have several different games runnig at once at different tables. So any game from 4 players and up would work. Heck if you can think of a game to involve all 30 people even better.

Game Length: Probably 30 minutes max per game, we want people to be free to move between tables and mingle so anything that lasts for a really long time is out.

Complexity of Game: Preferably something that can be explained in 5 minutes, or have a simple rule sheet. The plan is to have a number of people familiar with each game ahead of time so that there's always someone available to explain things.

Budget: Unsure. The purchase of games will be part of the cost of the wedding, but I'm not sure what they've budgeted for it.

Genre: No specific genre, though if there were some Korean or Canadian board games it would fit with the bride and groom's cultural backgrounds

Competitive or Cooperative: Either will work. The main goal is getting people to interact. Eurogames where you mainly manage your own little empire like Puorto Rico or Trajan might not be the best fit, for example

Games Owned: Despite being fans of boardgames, the bride and groom are more fans of other peoples boardgames so this is a chance to build a collection.

What I was thinking of so far:

  • Two Rooms and a Boom - I've not actually played this, but my understanding is that it's a good game for large groups to all play at once and gets people talking while they try to figure out peoples roles.
  • The Resistance - Everytime I've played this, complete strangers end up laughing and suspecting each other in the best way.
  • Spyfall - Again I haven't played it but I've heard good things
  • Pandemic - Co-op and rather easy to explain if you have someone who has played it before
  • Sheriff of Nottingham - I've only played it once, but I think it might fit the goals
