Question for all you amiibo customizers

Please forgive me if this is a dumb question, as I have little to no experience in painting. I've been thinking of getting into custom gold painting some of my amiibos. Some of the figures I want to paint have those transparent supports to keep the figure from falling. I was wondering if I should take the amiibos off the supports to paint, or if it's not too hard to paint around the supports. If I should take the amiibos off, what's the safest way of getting them off? Thank you :)
