Help choosing a first electric guitar?

I've been playing for over a year and am basically looking to buy my first electric as I've been previously borrowing one from the guy I take lessons off (I think he wants it back now lol).

I'm into rock/punk/heavymetal type stuff so I'd like something to accommodate for that, and I'm not looking to spend over $1000 AUD.

I already know I don't want anything with a floyd rose, but other than that I really have no idea what to get.

Any suggestions?
