I FOUND OUT HOW TO FORCE THE WINDOWS UPGRADE VIA WINDOWS UPDATE!

I got the information from the registry editing part of the following post, but it was wrong:

https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/3fa5af/windows10_update_error_80240020_windows_update/

When I tried the RegEdit hack, it would not work because 0x00000001 is not a valid DWORD, And 0x0000001 would not work. Instead, you just need to set it to 1. So these are the new instructions:

Open RegEdit

Locate the registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade] It should exist, but if not, create it. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 1

After that, I clicked on the Windows 10 notification icon in my toolbar. As before, there was a box saying "OK, notify me when ready", but next to that was a new text box that said "More information". Click on that, and you get a new click area which says "I want to upgrade now anyway (not recommended)". CLICK ON THAT, and then after a bit it will bring up Windows Update and you will have a new option Get Started on upgrading to Windows 10!

This worked for me with Windows 7. I did not have to do any "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" but this might be necessary if you do NOT have the Get Windows 10 tray icon.

Edit: Update - Just got back from upgrading! Took 3 hours, plus another hour wrangling with my sound drivers to get everything back to where it should be. I also had to deal with a crash... if you have a Gigabyte motherboard, it installs an application called On/Off that causes a crash in applecharger.sys whenever you power down or reboot the system. This is apparrently a bug in Windows 8 as well. So if you have Gigabyte, be sure to uninstall the On/Off app!
