Why do some of the people so focused on protecting the right to have guns act so disproportionately hostile? What do they seek to gain?

Ive met many rational folks who strongly, vocally support gun rights. The vast majority of them are quite reasonable. this isn't about them. Im wondering about the ones who just preemptively use hyper-violent rhetoric and baseless insults on theoretical detractors
