Alfred Hitchcock is arguably the leading contender as the most Oscar snubbed filmmaker in history. Who else is seemingly famously ignored by the Academy?

North by Northwest

Psycho

Vertigo

Rear Window

These are undoubtedly some of the best films ever made. None of them even scored a nomination the years they came out and that to me, is a criminal oversight by an organization dedicated to recognizing the best work in film on a yearly basis. Rebecca won a Best Picture award and while it is a great film, it's legacy has proved to pale in comparison to his other films. Hitchcock was also nominated for Best Director multiple times and didn't win a single time. For a director's whose body of work is still seen as the benchmark in suspense and influence is seen in even the best films coming out today, it's safe to say this is one of the biggest oversights by the Academy.

Oh and that Stanley Kubrick fellow. His only Oscar was for Best Special Effects for 2001. Not even a Best Picture or a Best Director to his name.
