Newcastle have failed to score in their opening game in four of their five seasons since returning to the top flight (W1, D1, L3).
Saints have won their opening Premier League fixture just once since 1999 - 1-0 at West Brom in 2013.
Their last victory on the road was 1-0 at QPR on 7 February, 15.
Steve McClaren: "Southampton had a good season last season and they got into Europe but I think that will hinder them as the season goes on."
"But does it at the beginning? I don't think so, because they have started their competitive games earlier and they have got into that rhythm.
Assistant manager Erwin Koeman: "If you play Europa League, don't complain - you have to be happy that you can play in it and happy that you start on Sunday in the Premier League. "Football does not sleep - it lives every day. Before you know it, it's Sunday so we have to prepare ourselves very well because that's a totally different game from the two against Vitesse [Arnhem]."
Predictions:
Lawro v Swann 2-1 / 2-0
