I was out with my bestie, and we were talking about how much we hated it when guys approaching us would mention how smart we were, as opposed to just keeping up intelligent conversation. About thirty seconds after she left to use the restroom a cute guy sat next to me and made a comment about my physics/cosmology tattoo, keeping up intelligent conversation as opposed to just being condescending and talking about how smart I was. The rest of the night was wonderful, I stayed over, we cuddled and he took my info the next morning.

Now, I havent spoken with him in a few days but I noticed something else. He never mentioned my skin color, once. He never did the weird contemporary fetishism and ask to touch my hair, he never said he always loved black women or always wanted to try black women. The only time he made reference to my ethnicity at all was when he said he liked my afro-punk style, which is usually what I go for anyway so it was a compliment.

I may never see him again, and by the time I realized how refreshing the moment was it already passed. Damn.
