Using Django as an MIS?

Hello all,

I've been developing with Django on and off for a little over two years now and am quite comfortable using it.

In my company we use an MIS (Management Information System) that is specific to our industry that is starting to show its age. We're contemplating on moving away from it as any new developments we undertake seem to be hindered by this archaic piece of software.

After speaking with my MD about it I've began considering different options, Django being my favourite at this point in time simply due to the fact I know how to use it and I've written a lot of our other internal systems using it.

This would be a far larger project then any I have ever undertaken before and I'd also be tackling it alone unlike previous projects.

At it's most basic, it would need to:

  • Hold client information, such as contacts and addresses
  • Hold order information, including finishing and processing techniques
  • Hold delivery information, time and date due and location etc
  • Hold stock information, quantities and specifications
  • Other similar information to the above that escapes me at the moment

Am I being over ambitious? Are there any tips you can give me on how to approach something of this size? Am I even overestimating the complexity of the job at hand? I'm just a little concerned as this system is essentially cataloguing our companies entire operation.
