New discovery last night for Mario Kart 8.
So last night my brother and I wanted to drive backwards to see what happened and doing this we learned something new.
What we did was start up a match on baby park. Once the map started we tried to turn around and drive backwards to see what happened but always got stopped and turned back around. After a few tries we realized you couldn't just turn around and drive backwards.
So at this point I went and just hit 2 to go in reverse with out having to turn around. Now this way did not stop us and we were able to do a full lap with out being turned around.
We did a few laps in reverse to see if it made to redo the laps before going to lap two, after 3 full laps in reverse we tried to drive one forward to see what happened. Here's where we learned something new and slightly funny.
Upon completing the first forward lap we didn't see the lap counter go up (as we expected) but once we finished the follow up lap it went to lap 2 out of 7. We thought for sure that the 3 in reverse would need to be completed before the lap counter would start up.
We then restart the lap counter and tried to reverse half the map and see what happened, the lap counter did not go to 2 out of 7 when we did this, so we stopped again and reverse all the way around the lap to right before the finish line. My brother stopped right before re-crossing the finish line and I went past it to start as if I was starting from the starting position.
When we completed that lap forward my brother stayed at 1 out of 7 but because I crossed the finish line and then re-crossed it I went to 2 out of 7.
So to sum it up, if you want to in theory make the race 4 laps what you need to do is go in reverse and stop right before recrossing finish line then drive forward as if your normally driving and once you cross the finish line for the first time it should not add one lap to the counter because you did not technically complete a full lap.
This can be done on any race you do not hit jumps on and from our count that is 13 races.
Please add more info if you learn more out on this! Maybe one day Nintendo will give us the option to change how many laps we can do in a race like a real racing game.
