Fans of the original Mission Impossible show, How do you feel about Brian De Palma's Mission Impossible? (spoilers for the now 19 year old movie in post)

I love the franchise of Mission Impossible. I think Mission Impossible 3 & 4 are fantastic action movies that truly capture the spirit of the show and Mission Impossible II was a garbage movie that had little to no resemblance to the show but it was at least fun to look at. But I have started to notice how much people enjoy the 1996 movie when IMO, it is one of the most insulting movies to fans of the show but it is often regarded as one of the best action movies of the 90's by people who never saw the show. It really fails to capture any of the spirit of the show. The show was entirely about the team and within the first 5 minutes the team is completely slaughtered and then it's basically The Tom Cruise show until he creates another team and then they all double cross him. Which I guess I could forgive because it could be seen as an interesting take on the TV show and a cool man on the run movie with an IMF agent. But when Phelps is revealed to be the big bad, it was like if Bond turned out to be a double agent for SPECTRE or if Kirk shot everyone in the Enterprise. I admire some of the sequences but the love of my show keeps me hating the movie so much. How did you enjoy it?
