Looking to exit my small cleaning/lawn care business. $100k total revenue so far

Hey everyone,

First off, I love the community you all have built. I didn’t discover it until after I built my business, but this would have saved me a ton of time and effort! LCS is a god, and even though I don’t agree with 100% of the advice in this sub, I’ve never seen such an open and transparent community that pushes each other to such great heights.

Anyway, I’ve built a very small home services business along the lines of what you all are doing, but I’ve found I simply don’t have a passion for it. Over the past 6 months I’ve given it almost no attention and it hasn’t grown since last year. I hired a full time customer service specialist to manage things, and while that keeps it going, the playbook I wrote is not strong enough for it to grow without more attention from myself. My attention is currently focused on a business I’m running with my dad, and since that one is taking off (>$30mm in annual revenue now) that’s where I plan on spending all my time moving forward.

That being said, I think we’ve built a solid foundation, and if one of you with a lot of energy were to dive in I think you could absolutely crush it. And I think this business could be a launching point to save you a lot of the upfront headaches.

So I’m posting here to see if there is any interest in either buying some or all of the business or partnering with me in some way.

Here are some facts about the business:

  • First customer served in late 2013
  • $101k in total revenue collected through stripe (roughly another $5k offline). Here’s the obligatory proof screenshot.
  • Custom built technology for booking, handling calls, emails, recurring jobs, and invoicing. It auto-records conversations, ties emails to customers, can charge customers, can send customers an invoice where they can pay online, lets customers book online, etc. I’m a developer and built it mostly myself in Python/Django/Bootstrap.
  • We have two lines of business: lawn services and cleaning. Cleaning is all in Chicago. Lawn services are in the western suburbs of Chicago, and a few in Greenville, SC (we originally started there and then moved to Chicago so we have some long-time customers we still service).
  • Lawn mowing has decent gross margins of around 35%. Average price per cut is $40-$45
  • Landscaping has ok margins of between 20-30% per job.
  • Cleaning margins are also ok at around 35%.
  • Currently working with 3 main lawn care guys (they each have a helper or two), and three cleaners (each of them have a helper or two as well). One of the lawn care guys is seriously the best I’ve ever seen. Ever. The rest of the people we range from good to great but are not ridiculously amazing like my main lawn care guy.
  • If you are handling all aspects of the business, it will be profitable for you from day one. If you are relying on a full time support person to run it for you, it will not be profitable from day one. Because I intend to spend my time on my other company, this is why I am selling.

I’m looking to do one of the following:

  1. Partner with one of you who is very energized and motivated. We can talk more about what that might look like. This partnership could potentially include the software side of this business, as the software is quite strong now.
  2. Sell the services piece of the business. Even though this is small, I’m sure our customer base may be useful to someone.

Please message me if you have any questions or if this interests you in any way.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and keep crushing it everyone!
