More PVP Advice from a PVP Novice!

[Discussion]

Hey guys! This is my first new 'thread' here on Reddit, but I wanted to make a post to give some more helpful PVP advice from me, a guy who has played a few dozen Seize matches and has a general idea of simple things people could afford to do to help win matches.

I'll preface this by saying that I'm currently a Rank 20 White Mage, so I'm certainly no expert at PVP. These are a few useful tips to hopefully keep you alive or even pull out more wins in your PVP matches. (This advice is mostly Seize-based. Seize is, honestly, the only Frontlines matches people are playing now, so it gets the majority of my attention.)

• Stay together!

  • Most teams will mark healers at the start of matches. Pay attention to these marks!
  • On that same note, if you're hurt please run towards the person with the big mark above their head. If you run away you're going to be out of range for healing and healers can't exactly heal while chasing you around.
  • On average, 30% or more of the people in a 24 man alliance are going to have status effects at any given time. Sleep is generally important enough for an Esuna/Leeches, but unless you're taking 1/4 of your HP per tick don't expect healers to clear you of debuffs/DoTs, sorry.

• Stay together!

  • If you're a caster, use Swiftcast (and even Surecast) as much as possible. Don't let it sit there unused. You're wasting it. There's no 'proper time' for it since the damage in PVP is hard and fast.

  • PVP skills are usually really good. Use those as well (when applicable). They can be a bit more situational, but if you never use any you're wasting them.

  • Cooldowns should also be liberally applied and generally abused. You can (and will) get nuked in 2 seconds or less here. There's no reason to hoard your CDs.

  • The same goes for your LB. You don't share an LB bar in PVP, so abuse it when you can. (DRG/MNK pretty much have an OHKO LB, while BRD/MCH/SMN/BLM have really good damage against groups of enemies. The healer LB is kind of terrible...)

  • If you're a healer: HEAL. There's no Cleric Stance in PVP so your attacks are weaker than anyone else. You're going to be hard pressed to get kills and every second you spend DPSing is a second one of your teammates is probably dying. (DoTs on SCH are always applicable if you have the time, though.)

  • If you're a tank: Sorry, no aggro. You'll have to learn to play differently. Your new job is to annoy the hell out of the other team by soaking up damage and poking them constantly.

  • If you're a DPS: Your job hasn't changed. Avoid running directly into groups of enemies if you can and be ready to escape once they all start targeting you.

• Stay together

  • Any damage taken while capturing a seize point (has an 'interacting' timer) cancels the capture. Use that to your advantage. If you have a spammable AoE, get on that tower and spam it. Nobody's capturing it while you're around.
  • Taking an enemy's tower is useless if you die. You lose 5 points for your team and the enemy team gets 5 points. You're now 10 points behind to get a tower that probably would have paid out 30 or less points.
  • B rank towers aren't worth losing more than a few people on. If your party is dying a lot, fall back. S rank towers are where you want to make a real stand.
  • In fact, sometimes the best thing you can do is grab a tower (or two if you're lucky) nearby and move as a team towards wherever the nearest group of enemies is. Holding a tower will get you 40-80 points. Massacring a group of enemies will get you that much and more, plus subtract that much from their score!

• Use your map and your minimap. Capturable towers appear on both maps (the larger obviously being more effective) as well as enemies (that are within eyesight, I think). Have this up at all times and make a habit of checking it to see how the enemy teams are moving.

  • If you get enough kills without dying you're going to get a "Battle High" effect. This generally makes you better at what you do. This also makes you the main target of every enemy in the damn game. You did good, now find a healer and stick to them like glue because everyone and their mother is going to be after you.

  • The reverse also applies. If you see someone with Battle High on the map, find them, mark them, and kill them with extreme prejudice. You get extra points and you remove their damage buff. Be wary, though, because they're even better at killing you now.

  • Did I mention to STAY TOGETHER? The single most important rule of PVP (or, at least, Seize) is to move as a cohesive group. Your small group of three people running into 15+ enemies at their tower is going to be less than worthless. Congratulations, you might have just cost us the match by giving the enemy a 30 point lead. There will be times when your full force of 24 players won't be able to hold off an enemy's full force of 24, and even some times when it feels like both of the other teams have decided to rain all over your parade, but still try to stay with your group.

  • And don't forget:

  • STAY

  • TOGETHER
