AS2 crafting frames don't work?

Is there something I'm missing here?

[edit] So, I stick a crafting frame on an inventory (tried; compact storage max size chest, better barrel, upgraded and not upgraded, vanilla chest), fill the inventory (chest barrel etc) with cobble, keep a few spare stacks in my own inventory, place a design pattern (tried cobble slabs, compressed cobble and cobble stairs) on the super crafting frame attached to said inventory. I right click the frame (which now has the little graphic of the item I want to craft) and nothing happens, I right click the image of the stairs or whatever is in the frame, nothing happens, all different inventories I tried, different crafting recipes (stairs flipped around, slab bot mid top etc) and nothing happens. I try shift left clicking and changing the top right hand side of the crafting frame settings to 'inventory only' nothing happens, 'player only' nothing happens, 'inventory and player' nothing happens.

As you can see, the block behaves as though it is working, displaying the item correctly, adding a single one into the crafting recipe as it is want to do, and yet nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? Am I supposed to hold some sort of item to make a crafting frame work? Is there some silly config option which I overlooked that enables inventory interaction or something?

I figured since its most basic function seems to be not working I would only have to mention it in passing and anyone who knew what was going on could simply confirm 'yeah it's broke in 1.1.6 wait for an update' or whatever. But obviously my vagueness and laziness gives an impression that I don't want to give (ie. pl0x halp iz brokeN!). Hopefully I've been detailed enough in my description of what doesn't happen when I use a crafting frame for someone to diagnose my issue! Thanks for reading xP
