Subtank Mini with new RBA - leaking AND dry hits on the same build?

I have the subox mini kit and recently started playing with the RBA. Currently the way I wick it is to make sure there's a very slight amount of resistance when threading through the included coil, and then I thread each end of the cotton through the side juice holes and cut them about a millimeter outside of the barrel. Previously, I would cut the wick to be inside the barrel which worked fine, but then a day later I would find juice leaking out of the air holes. With this build, it was fine yesterday except for some dry hits on ~6 second draws at 30w, but then I woke up today to find juice leaking from the air holes again. It seems like no matter how I wick this thing I either get many dry hits or it just starts leaking randomly. Any suggestions? I've been using 30/70 pg/vg juices. I was thinking I should maybe try building a 3mm diameter coil (I think the included coil is somewhere between 2-2.5mm) and using a bit more cotton to eliminate dry hits, and maybe that would help the leaking as well.
