Do you think performing music in small venue count as a "job/work?"

I am a non-american student who will study abroad in America (Massachusetts to be clear), and I want to perform music (I am not that good but...just skip this) while I study in college. Although I (might surely) get a money "by doing something," I am not clearly sure if I am being against rules. What do you guys think?
