How do they do it?

I see beautiful flower gardens all around town... Hostas bigger than my dog, black eyed susans for days, lots of beautiful flowers and greenery filling in all the space. I have hostas and daisies but my garden looks sparse and pathetic. What should I do? What are some good filler plants? Do you order seeds and plants online? I live in southern new england so we have cold winters! Thanks :)
