Ending of 1984 Discussion (Spoilers)
I just recently finally finished 1984, incredible read, very poignant message, I really enjoyed it but had some issue with the ending.
I have a question/thought regarding the scene where SPOILERALERT Winston is in Room 101. Surely he should have realized in his logical mind why they brought him there and that they still had to break his love bond with Julia; he had not yet abandoned this love or betrayed her to which O'Brien agreed. Even if they killed him, he would have been a martyr for that love, which they wouldn't have allowed. Also, they would have to have killed Julia, else she would've realized after getting out, that even though she betrayed Winston, he did not betray her and that it was still worth fighting against the party.
If the party had to kill both of them, it certainly would've instilled some doubt to the party members involved as to their ability to control the populace. Also, the acceptance of death was something that Winston and Julia had both agreed upon, I guess I was just really disappointed that their resolve was broken so badly. Let me know what you think.
