Skyla IUD 9 Month Review
When I first started looking into an IUD I found plenty of reviews for Mirena and Paragard, but very few for Skyla. I figured a longer term review would help out a few people. I am 21 with no children. The idea of longer, heavier periods and a greater chance of expulsion made me shy away from the Paragard. Mirena had a lot of mixed reviews due to side effects of the hormones. Skyla did a really good job marketing to younger women with no children because I fell for it. Previously I had been on lutera for about a year. I actually had a very good experience on lutera but having to take a pill at the same time every day became an annoying task.
I had to visit a women's clinic because a general gynecologist refused to give me an IUD because I had no children (if your doctor refuses, make sure to ask around). The insertion was in November 2014, scheduled on the 2nd day of my period. I had read all of the painful stories on the sub about insertion and yes it was painful. However, the pain subsided very quickly. The whole process was probably five minuets or less. I had an ultrasound to make sure it was in place and walked out like nothing changed. The day continued normally with just a few extra cramps then a usual.
In the 9 months since I have had the IUD my periods have gotten lighter and lighter, still an average of 5 days. A common issue that i experienced was a slight yeast infection, something that I had never gotten before I had the IUD placed. I was given antibiotics to combat it, however I sometimes feel the same symptoms coming back right as my period is about to begin. Because of this, I will be taking a trip back to the clinic soon.
All in all I really recommend this form of birth control. I was very hesitant to try this but I finally gave in and told myself myself that I had to try it for at least 6 months. So far so good.
