Theory about Hermione's childhood (spoilers)
In the books and movies, Hermione's past is really glossed over until she wipes her parents' memories and leaves them behind, and even then she makes it a very brief affair. I believe Hermione is a name that the Roald Dahl character Matilda made up for herself before she left for wizarding school, and Hermione is just older Matilda fulfilling her potential. The brain levitation and under-challenged brilliance from Matilda all fit, as well as Hermione's adoration for books and horror at their destruction. It would also explain why she's never been enthusiastic about discussing her past.
