ibuypower CZ-17 black screen / BSoD VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (nvlddmkm.sys) on all GPU accelerated applications and games. multiple fixes attempted.
im currently running an ibuypower CZ-17 laptop, with
- core i7 3740QM
- GTX 675m
- 16GB DDR3
the problems first emerged about a month ago on windows 8.1 and nvidias 347.52 driver, with no major changes to the system. playing heroes of the storm for about 3 hours ended abruptly with a completely black screen but i was still receiving sound and clicking resulted in movement in game according to my friends (viewed from their computers), attempting to alt tab or crtl+alt+delete could not move the black screen out of the way, the task bar was now visible over the black screen but it was unresponsive.
I shut down the computer and it turned on as normal, but ever since the computer runs just fine except any program requiring the GPU has crashed within 5-20 minutes, either most commonly a BSoD stating VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (nvlddmkm.sys) or very rarely the same black screen issue.
I had been on windows 8.1 and nvidias 347.52 driver for months with no issues, i wasnt on nvidias latest driver at the time because I had heard the new ones were buggy / prone to TDRs.
i have attempted numerous fixes with a full windows reinstall after every few attempts.
-
i tried deleting nvlddmkm.sys from my system32 and using expand.exe on nvlddmkm2.sy_
-
using the crash as a motivator I upgraded to windows 10 with a complete clean install and nvidia's new 353.62 W10 driver. but still the crashing persisted
-
with gaming as my primary concern for this system I fresh installed window 8.1 again and tried running on driver 353.25, 353.49, 347.52, 345.20 and later 344.75 each time either running DDU driver remover / ccleaner in safe mode or a fresh windows reinstall. still crashes persisted through all driver versions.

I thought overheating could be the cause so i downloaded GPU-Z and fired up a game, everything seemed normal 100% load, 65C was the highest temperature I managed to record which is fine, but then the card just disappeared. everything read zero followed quickly by another BSoD.
-
i opened the case to examine the interior everything seemed fine, the fan was slightly dusty but i didnt see any major clumps or blockages. a steady stream of warm air can be felt from the side and back vents.
-
one of the nvidia driver installs mentioned an incompatibility with realtek PCI-E card reader so I disabled / uninstalled the drivers / ccleaner before installing 347.52 but that didnt solve anything either
im at my wits end here im not sure what else to do. Im currently just chilling on w8.1 ad nvidia 344.75 while i explore more fixes, but its just beyond bizarre performance is perfect, 225FPS all settings maxed in league of legends has been my go to test on most installs, every game runs flawlessly right up to the surprise bluescreen. same problems with heroes of the storm, and even hearthstone. bafflingly my latest install managed to play starbound for 35minutes with no crash i assumed i had fixed it yet the next time i played starbound the following morning it crashed in 10 minutes.
i still dont want to rule out overheating as jumping directly back into a game after a crash seems to result in a faster crash, and often times the fan is louder than usual and all the rare black screen crashes result in turbo fan mode turning on. yet hitting the turbo fan button from the onset doesnt seem to stave off crashing at all despite the noise, and i failed to find anything unusual in 10 minutes with GPU-Z.
this subreddit helped me find a replacement for the dead power supply / cable a few months ago, even spoke with an ibuypower rep so i have high hopes. please help!
in the meantime I'll be gaming on a Q9400 560ti desktop but its dreadfully slow and cant watch 1080p 60fps content like twitch or youtube, im leaving for school in a week and i dont want to be stuck lugging this heavy monster around.
at the very least is there a way i cant force low spec games to play through the intel HD4000? I know the IGPU cant handle much but its definitely more than enough for league / hearthstone / starbound.
