Target shooting on public land?

Hey guys,

I have some steel AR500 targets that I'd like to shoot. Does anyone know of any public or private land (with sufficient backstop and outside of city limits) that I can safely shoot on? I'm a responsible gun owner so I'll be practicing all fundamental gun safety rules and will clean up after myself after use. I currently own mostly 9mm but would eventually like to get into rifle calibers if I can secure a reliable source of land to shoot on.

I'm not interested in joining MSSA due to the price of their membership. I've checked out Desoto Rifle and Pistol Club and might consider joining them if all else fails. I'd just rather be able to set up my own steel and be able to shoot without a range officer breathing over my shoulder.
