[Star Wars] The Personhood/Citizenship of Droids
In the Star Wars universe, artificial life forms are clearly fully sentient and sapient beings, capable of spontaneous thought, developing their own opinions, and even expressing emotion. However, they also appear to be treated as an underclass, mostly serving organic life-forms. There are some notable exceptions, like IG-88, the robot bounty hunter.
They are even bought and sold as property. In places like the lawless Outer Rim where other forms of slavery are still legal, this may be the norm, but even during the times of the Old Republic, droids were utterly subservient to their masters (like the many astromech droids that were destroyed repairing Queen Amidala's ship in The Phantom Menace).
It is clear that robotic life is seen as inferior to organic in the Star Wars universe. But since droids have been fully sentient for millennia, how have they never developed a society of their own, gained political representation, or fought for liberation? Or have they?
