What's up with the saying "thank goodness"?!

The longer I've been away from the church, the more this has stuck out to me. Isn't it a good thing to say "Thank God"? You're not taking the lords name in vain, you're literally saying that you're thanking God.

What's wrong with that?

I was reading the comments section of a KSL article about a BYU football player that fractured his neck during practice. Horrific injury and I'm glad he's okay, but I came across this comment:

"Lucky it was not worse. He could have easily been paralyzed - thank goodness that did not happen. "

It almost comes across as an atheist-style "thank the universe" kind of deal. Not that I have any problem with that at all, it just seems funny that it's what mormons say.

Why does mormon culture promote thanking "goodness" instead of thanking God?
