What was the West Bank like before the Oslo Accords?

What kind of restrictions of movement were there for Palestinians? Was it possible to drive from Jerusalem to Bethlehem on Hebron Rd without any obstacles? Were residents of Israeli settlements required to drive through Palestinian cities, e.g. through Bethlehem to reach Gush Etzion or through Hebron for Kiryat Arba?
