We were not alone in that house...

This is an old story from back when I was 12. I used to live in an urban area but my school was located in a less populated place.

Next to my school was an abandoned boarding school. In English it's name would translate to "Majesty Hills", and it was closed for many years, but authorities decided to leave the place intact. So all of the old buildings were just left there inside a fenced grove of over 20 acres of land. Try to imagine a post apocalyptic village with a lot of broken down stuff and wild animals running all over the place. It was a creepy forest with empty houses, every young explorer's wet dream!

Back in the day, me and my friends' parents used to take turns in picking us up from school. Each day another friend's parents would come pick us up by a car. It was convenient, but sometimes a parent would be late or we would finish school earlier than expected. If something like that happened, we would have time go out and explore the grove of the abandoned school. We were a group of three friends. Brave souls going around breaking old furniture, LARPing or chasing wild animals.

For us it was fun, but our parents hated it. The place was in no way safe. There were needles, bongs and used condoms strewn all over the place. Old traps, broken glass and dangerous pits. We had some scary encounters there and some really weird, unexplained situations.

But there was one time I will never forget. It haunts me to this day...

It was another day in school when we decided to skip class and go out to explore a deeper area of the grove we haven't been to before. We stopped at an old house. It was nothing special compared to the other abandoned buildings we've been to, but we decided to check it out.

We got inside. The place was a long corridor with doors on each side (probably old class rooms). The entrance was right in the middle of it so we could go either left or right. However, the right hand side of the hallway was blocked by a strong metal plate, welded shut to the sides of the wall. So we went left.

We started to check out the rooms. They were indeed old class rooms. However, every now and then... something was off. One room had the alphabet painted on the wall, but it went like this: "A, B, C, D, E, A, T, H, D, E, A, T, H, D, E, A, T, H, D, E, A, T, H, D, E, A, T, H" The correct letters were scratched off and painted over in red. Blood red. Spelling "DEATH". Another room's wall had a painting of an evil mermaid. Her genitals were displayed and she had a creepy grin. There were other weird and creepy stuff there. We just assumed this was the work of some junkies and graffiti artists, but it was different from anything else we saw in the other abandoned houses.

We came to a small room which had a lot of dish plates and glasses piled up. Time to have some fun I guess. We started to break the plates by turns. Each friend picked up a plate and threw it on the floor to shatter it.

This is when things started to get weird...

My friend picked up another plate and shattered it. Then I heard another shatter sound following his. It was a faint sound and it came from a different part of the building. I was shocked.

"Did you hear that?" I asked. "Hear what?" my friend says. "I heard another sound, coming from a different room".

Apparently I was the only one who heard it. My friends thought I was joking. Trying scare them. But I knew what I heard. I was really creeped out but I decided to check it out while my friends stayed in that room, breaking stuff. I went out back to the corridor. Walking across the hallway, I glanced over my shoulder checking out the empty class rooms. I got all the way back to the metal plate that sealed the rest of the building. It was probably nothing.

Then I noticed something...

I looked down on the metal plate. The bottom part of it was cut or welded open, as if to make an opening for someone to crawl under. The weird thing about this, I don't think it was there earlier.

With my last bit of courage, I crouched to look under it. I saw the continuation of the hallway and... two feet. A person was standing right in front of the metal plate. I could only see his legs. He wore army boots, dirty and old, and he was standing right in front of me, facing me.

My heart was racing at this point. I got up quickly and ran back to my friends. "Were getting out of here. Now" I said. "Why? What's up?" "We are not alone in this house" "Oh come on! Enough with your tricks, it's not funny"

Now, I don't know if this ever happened to you, but let me tell you. Having such a frightening experience while having your friends not believe you... there's nothing worse than this. It took a few moments of trying to convince them to escape the house with me, before I started to tear up. Then right before they were starting to believe me, we heard foot steps. Big foot steps coming from the hallway. Luckily, the room had a broken down window we could escape from.

We got out of the house and walked around it back to the main road where the entrance was. Then we noticed another thing that we didn't notice before. Right outside the house, parked an old van. It was very rusty and the wagon was filled with many different tools like cutters, hammers, saws, et cetera.

We realized someone was in that house with us, but before leaving, we had to make one last stupid move. My friend shouted "Who's there!?" No answer. "Get out! We know you're in there!" No answer. "Were calling the police!" Then we heard a voice coming from inside... "Okay... I'M COMING OUT FOR YOU!!!"

Whoever this person was, he had a powerful shout. He sounded like he was coming out to tear us into pieces. We ran away.

It was the last time we went there.
