Copyright a comic book series?

I am having a comic book series published and I want to protect the ideas, names, characters and images etc. How should I go about doing this? Should I look into registering a trademark as well? I have all of the information on how to register copyrights and trademarks but I'm not sure how much of the material in the books will be protected.
