In terms of the medical system and AI, is ACE 3 useless for single player?

If I put an AI medic in my squad, is he not capable of healing me or the rest of the team? I've noticed I can heal members of my team (unless they're downed, I can't pick them back up) but if I order a medic to heal me or another member, he doesn't listen.
