The show may take place in the future, I have no idea. I think we never got to see any date that would suggest it's happening those days.

It must be, as Elliot was born in 1986 and his father died when he was 8 years old, so around the year ~1994.

The last scene with Tyrell and his wife shows a TV-screen with MSNBC news reporting that the "Boston Bomber verdict is expected in coming days". This series could be set in 2015. That can't be a screw-up.

What's the issue with that photo. He may have written his encrypted cd a few years ago only. Then had a breakdown (would explain a therapist) and forgotten his sister and father assuming he died or something

I think that's exactly the scenario we're dealing with now, and also why I think it's evident that Mr Robot is real and alive.

This is just far-out wild speculation: Elliot's father had an identical twin brother. Mr. Robot is actually Elliot's uncle. The images on the CD are actually a mixture of photos of Elliot's deceased dad and his still living uncle.

If Elliot's dad is really dead, this would be a damn big oversight by the crew after having done such a good job so far of keeping things air tight. I'm still on team real, though.

The CD didn't have any handwriting on it because it was a forgery.

No, I think this has a symbolic meaning.
"Nothing. No identity. I'm a ghost".
The CD cover was blank because Elliot is blank.
Also, it's no coincidence that the CD happened to be the very first one on the folder.
That means this particular disc is number zero. Meaning both "nothing" and "point of origin".

If something is on the screen it's because they want it to be there. Especially writers like Esmail who seem to have a very high attention to detail. So whatever theory you have or seem to believe at the moment that goes against the PS3 controller being there is wrong.

Could it be a wireless PS2 controller? I'm being told they looked almost identical. Although when I first looked at the photo I thought it was a PS4 controller. That's what got me.

It's definitely a ps3 controller. See the usb port on the top and the round ps button on the face of the controller. As opposed to a cord and a mode button on the ps2 one.

So unless this is a mistake, this has to mean he is alive. Surely Elliots delusional mind would just imagine a ps3 controller in a photo?
So, now we have to ask why Elliot had forgotten his dad, and Darlene being his sister, and how that could possibly be sustainable?

When they first started showing the photos, my reaction was, Elliot is MR robot.. then as the episode continued I presumed that Eliot was imagining Mr robot, now given this photo, it seems as if.. Elliot is indeed Mr robot, which explains why he doesn't exist, explains the 'i'm a ghost' line and the the 'your the ghost' line in the trippy episode (although it was debatable that she actually said that), and the 'you're not Elliot' line...
Although a lot of other stuff doesn't make sense if this is true.. we'll see

damn it! after watching this episode I was 100% that mr robot was elliots dead dad, alive only as a hallucination and alternate personality. Now I am thinking some of these other theories of mr robot being alive seem more and more plausible!! mind fucked

Honestly I believe this to be an error in production. They probably outsourced the rejuvinating photoshop work during post production and then missed it in the last screenings. Stuff like that doesn't go through as much scrutiny as things that show up in the script stages or during shoting.
This is my thinking. I can just imagine Sam Esmail seeing this now and losing his shit. He's crafted a damn near air tight show and something like this could fuck up the whole story because someone forgot to remove the PS3 controller from this photo.
I am 99% sure Elliot's dad is dead (this post sums it up pretty well). But this photo puts doubt on him being dead.
Yeah i agree he's almost certainly dead, unless they expect us to believe the mr robot character looks any older than the one on the photos.
Like the production mistake with the disappearing appletini glass? In ep 3?
Something in me tells me that they would not be this reckless. It's probably a "subtle" clue.
I think they want it to look photoshoped. ;)
