Terror on Moonbase Alpha - Chapter 2 - Part 3
There's no shame in dying.
No shame at all when you encounter a superior, overwhelming force.
Why, it's the most natural thing of all, to be beaten, subjugated. The weak exist to feed the strong.
Just one touch, that's all it takes. Just give in.
Kara feels these thoughts and more, in hundreds of languages and fragments of images that pour into her mind as she rolls away from the oncoming attack. She pushes away from the wall, making a break for the door.
Like little needle-legged spiders crawling at the edges of her mind, she can feel her brain tingling... shuffling, as if this thing is rummaging around inside her head.
"Just make it to the door," she grunts, willing herself forward, eyes locked on the big, red Emergency button. The button that would seal off this section, that would cause a firestorm of activity here on the base -- that would send top brass into a tizzy and, if there's any luck, they would send in someone far more experienced than her to deal with whatever this was. Maybe the Army, maybe the DDF.
It didn't matter anymore what they thought of her, who they blamed. They needed to know, she needed to warn them. Just that one button, that red button would save them all.
In that moment she realized she'd been standing beside the button for several seconds now, hand outstretched, hovering over the red button.
And she couldn't move her hand... or her arm. A warm numbness was washing over her.
In her mind she heard a thousand coos in a thousand languages all bidding her to sleep, that she had done well enough to defy them this long. That her prize would be a painless death - the rarest of gifts.
A merciful gift.
She found herself thinking of home, of the downy-white pillows on mom and dad's bed, of snuggling up with them on a Saturday morning.
She knew it was drawing closer, she could sense its presence and yet every time she remembered the danger behind her, she felt her mind being pushed back toward that scene. Of her mom and dad, arms outstretched, waiting for her to jump into bed with them.
They were all smiles, big smiles... too-big smiles. The curl of a grin on her mom's face, one that snaked up past her earlobe, made her look horrific, demonic -- it was just a flicker, a rookie mistake, quickly corrected, but it was enough to shatter the illusion, enough to fill Kara with dread, to remind her of her purpose once more.
With a last gasp of strength, her last ounce of will, she thrusts her whole body forward, her frozen hand jamming into the Emergency button before crumpling to the floor.
And as it all fades to darkness, as the klaxxons -- and the voices in her head -- begin to roar, she finds herself smiling as she hears the final, heavy 'tsst!' of the doors sealing behind her.
And that wraps up part 3 of Chapter 2, hopefully you enjoyed it!
