The hotel in the video for "The Powers that B" is the Standard Hotel in Hollywood

Shortly after the video for "The Powers that B" came out, @bbpoltergiest tweeted this image

I searched for the initials on the blanket, 'GM' and came across Geoff McFetridge who designed blankets for the Standard Hotel in Hollywood.

They were staying in one of the smaller 'blue rooms'

notice the similar curtain and balcony

The infamous silver beanbag

Here's the original video for comparison

(i'm not going to include video stills because there really isn't much of a need to)

Here's a guy reviewing the same room

Universal owns Harvest so that could be in a literal sense as well.

they have sold a lot of LPs and also a lot of digital downloads of tms and tptb

But does that feed three people and pay the rent? Most people consume their music for free and they cancelled half their tours. I'm sure they have other sources of revenue

They sell drugs.

Well Im going to throw down an estimate that around 20k people worldwide at least have bought either a TMS or TPTB vinyl. Assuming a 25$ pricetag (which is way way less than most countries, but ive hears thats an average vinyl price in america) they have made at least 500k from physical sales alone. Since we know they all are used to living with very little money I am sure that lasts them a fair bit. This does not account at all for live show tickets or digital downloads either

if you think the artist gets 100% of the saleprice for record you are sorely mistaken. there's a good chance they make less than $3 per sale on those, so maybe a dollar each. so assuming 20k in sales, they each made 20k.

i don't know how many records they've actually sold or what the actual income is from that, but it won't be much, it most certainly isn't a half million just from sales.

when they signed to a major label they probably received a huge lump sum advance to record and live off of. they probably spent very little of that actually making the music (since they don't need an impressive studio or backing band) but i know they dropped a shit-ton living in that fucking hotel for however long they did. i'm sure they retained $0 from the universal payout, and probably screwed themselves over on royalties after.

most musicians nowadays make their money on tour, and even then mostly by selling merch. i'm sure they live pretty meagre lives and would be content making $25k a year each but if they even make that much each year from this then i'd be surprised. they probably got another advance from Harvest to record tptb but they're a pretty indie label so it cannot have been nearly as much as universal paid them.

it's pretty obvious from the stuff that pops up on a2b2 that andy freelances as a graphic/web designer. he woukdn't do that kind of small-time shit if he was set fro money. Zach probably gets a super super small trickle in from his previous albums (from hella more than anything) but that'll be Starbucks a couple times a week at most. remember that he was effectively homeless when Death Grips started up.

they're doing this because they love it. they're absolutely broke, though.

Really? In that case Death Grips is a lot more popular now then I estimated them to be. They've grown fast - come to think of it when I first started browsing this subreddit, there were less than 100 subscribers and no post had more than 10 upvotes. They've definitely done really well for themselves.

I'm sure they still had dayjobs or something during the early days. I think I recall Zach saying he did dishwashing and Stefan worked in a restaurant.

So this is the place they stayed while recording jenny death?

upsweepOPPeople are trying to hear what im saying•

Well theres no proof of that, however it is about 10 minutes away from Sunset Sound studios where they shot the video for On GP and (according to the website) presumably recorded music there.
