So what advice do you have for Casual SF readers?

Discussion

So stumbling in on this situation and reading about this whole "kerfuffle". Where does it leave me as a casual Science Fiction reader. Just ignore the Hugo awards? Anything else?

Yeah, ignore Hugo's and read what sounds interesting.

Baen free library, its got a good selection of stuff.

Also this is a awesome site for snippets of baen stuff http://jiltanith.thefifthimperium.com/ check out the baencd section (its all legit).

Also you can find some nice stuff self published via amazon.

If you have $40/year to spare, get a Sasquan supporting membership for the 2015-2016 period.. This will let you nominate and vote on candidates for the 2016 Hugos. You'll also get lots of sci-fi ebooks (worth a lot more than $40 in value). Finally, you'll get the pleasure of sticking it to SJWs/CHORFs with your votes.

It's important for non-incumbent fans to participate so the incumbent SJWs/CHORFs lose their chokehold over the Hugos.

Yeah, but I'm not "fan"... I just read Sci-Fi books occasionally. I think it is about 2 - 3 titles a year.

Even if you don't want to participate in the Hugo Awards proper, you are still encouraged to track what the Sad Puppies and the Rabid Puppies are doing, either through this sub, or through the blogs of the authors in charge of organizing them.

The Sad Puppies' organizers include:

A few Sad Puppies (and some other authors with aligning styles and values) also write for the Mad Genius Club.

The Rabid Puppies have one organizer:

These authors write and recommend books that deliver what science fiction and fantasy should be about: gripping tales that involve the future, futuristic technology, and/or fantastical alternate universes, not ideological-agenda-pushing pap that barely has any plot or any connection to the genre.

You'll probably find books you'll like through them.

If you're looking for good short SF, Analog is probably your best bet... time will tell with the new editor, he's shown some SJW tendencies, but so far there's still good stuff there (though there's crap too).

Baen is a reliable source of good SF and fantasy, both classic and new. A lot of Military SF, but not just Military SF. They also publish some crap, but very little that's throw-it-across-the-room unreadable. Baen has a reputation for conservative politics, but they publish Eric Flint (an actual trade unionist and socialist).

Pretty much everything on tor.com is crap. Not so for Tor itself; they do still publish some good SF.

Read what you enjoy. If you're uninformed and care to know more the information is available.

Thank you for the responses. I thought that it would be nice to tell the people here why I ask.

I would like to have some kind of warning before I pick-up a story that it will be SJW-fiction. The one that I didn't find before I watched Sense8. It was an experience to watch something that had a good story being drowned out by SocJus trying to educate me about their concepts. So I'll keep an eye out for info and try to find out more before I invest in stories.
