Legality Questions for Hiking uses only

I just bought a few Baofeng bf-888s for outdoor activities uses only. I did a lot of research and it seems like I made a mistake purchasing these as it isn't FCC approved. Before I waste my money paying for a return, I thought I should ask reddit first. Also, I am very sorry if this type of post keeps occurring in this sub reddit as I may seem like a newbie with radios. But please help a redditor out.

I know that FCC approved FRS radios must have an output of 500mW and that it must not have a removable antenna. The 888s has a minimum output of 1w and has a removable antenna which is a illegal.

I reprogrammed all the channels to FRS frequencies 467.5 to 467.7 only which means I am not on any emergency or public safety frequencies, nor any other frequencies I'm not allowed to be on without a license. Even still, I have an output of the minimum 1w.

I live in an urban area. The Bay Area, California. However, if I were to use it for hiking uses away from the bay, how likely am I going to get in trouble for having an output of 1w within the FRS frequencies, or even yet, not having an approved FCC radio.

My intended uses for these are to maintain contact with my friends when we are separated, where there is no cellular reception.

If I must return them for legal issues, what radio can you guys recommend.

Thank you guys so much. And once again, sorry for creating one of these annoying post.
