Not sure if I've been slighted by my best friend
My best friend and I grew up in different kinds of families- his had money, mine had a lot of money problems. After high school I worked full time and went to community college with little commitment or direction and he was an all-star engineer who upon graduating was head hunted by several companies. He decided to move to a state a few hours away from our home, break up with a girl he met in college but didn't like for a bunch of reasons (and had been contemplating breaking up with since month 3 of their relationship), and take a well paying engineering job where he had a lot of creative control. But he wasn't used to being alone, and within a few months of moving I could tell he was sort of miserable due to loneliness. He hadn't even explored the quaint town he lived in, or the streets around his house. He described his time not working as "video games, failing at tinder, going to the gym, getting drunk alone, and drinking milk". Hadn't met any people besides his immediate coworkers. This isn't how he was in our home state, at all.
At this point I have a decent part-to-full time (I ran author/poetry events to take me into full time/overtime) job at a bookstore, which I enjoyed but the bookstore was getting kind of anemic business-wise. But I was fine there while I looked for work elsewhere. I had just finished a semester of school with some aplomb (finally- I had done a lot of maturing between 22-24). I told my friend about my job search and a few days later he excitedly let me know there was a similar type of job to what I had at his engineering company- a growing thriving company. He told me he could get me in, and that I met a lot of the qualifications. However, the state he was in, wasn't anywhere I'd want to move. I had plans now for my life and this state wasn't a place I wanted to move, at all. But a solid job, my best friend being down the hall, and a new experience was too good to turn down.
Our dads were best friends, they lived together after high school and our whole lives we've heard stories of girl chasing, drunken escapades, crazy happenings, roommate quirks- etc. We had always planned to live together, and to me, after identifying a comparable community college to attend where we'd be living, it seemed like a good idea to start my independence with a solid job, new state, and alongside my best friend- who seemed so lonely it was painful for me to hear the blandness of his day to day.
The first few months we're living in an one bedroom apartment. I have set up a makeshift half room in the large living room and we make it work. We eventually start looking for a new place, and problems arise in what we're looking for. I'm looking for something I can afford while my roommates ego is growing and has a list of "needs"; onsite gym, inside the apartment laundry, verizon fios internet, multiple bathrooms, etc. These things push all the apartments he wants out of my affordability. Eventually, he just says- pay what you can. Which sucks, I wanted to be on an even keel but with what he wanted, that wasn't possible making 14$/hr. So hesitantly, I agree. I asked him multiple times how long he foresaw himself working in our new state, "two years" was the lowest answer I got, I also got "few years" "a while" blah blah. So we find a beautiful place for 2050/m I tell him I can do 750+ bills and that was pushing it. So we decided he gets the much larger bedroom, significantly nicer bathroom, control of the living room TV, and the reserved parking spot, we agree on this easily and sign a 13 month lease.
By this time the excitement of living together had seemed to fade for him. We hadn't had any arguments or anything, just a few "hey can you do the dishes this time" kind of things and no problems afterwards, basic nonproblems that went both ways. He was all about finding a girl, but didn't want to do it in real life. Despite my constant exploring of the area and bars, he stuck to tinder and okcupid- never even going on a real date. He had become uninteresting and therefore every time he'd talk to a girl it would die pretty quickly and I told him that in so many words. He stopped playing music, he stopped hiking/adventuring/being active, he stopped throwing/attending parties, etc. He just worked and watched shitty netflix shows on repeat. I tried weekly to get him to go places with me and even though I'm a hard introvert I had slowly carved out a social life for myself that he didn't want to be part of.
So we move in, on a Saturday, his brother comes down from our home state to help. We have a beautiful apartment and now we're finally in our own rooms and can have people over without it being in the room I'm sleeping in. Sunday though, his brother leaves and afterwards I'm quite excited and ask "So, what are we going to do with our first day in new town" and he replied "Actually I'm going home for tonight to talk to ex-girlfriend". He had work the next day in a state 3-4 hours away from where he was going on midday Sunday. This filled me with dread. He's the type of guy that becomes consumed by girls he dates way more than normal. For me, the biggest test of dating a girl is seeing if my best friend and her like eachother- when my friend dates a girl... I don't see him for a few months.
Fast forward a week, we're eating dinner at a burger place, he asks "do you really like it here? I'm going to start applying to jobs near home once our lease is almost up". I'm upset at this and tell him that, yes I like it and point out he hasn't really made an effort to like it here. But I don't make a big deal about it. Then, it starts. Every weekend, he drives back to our home state. I join a soccer league, meet a bunch of friends, and see him on weeknights. He stays in state only when his not-girlfriend-but-girl-he's-kind-dating-but-not-really can't see him. Each weekend he was home I would try really hard to do social or cool things with him, but he'd turn me down most of the time or we'd go to a bar and he'd be done after two drinks. This goes on for 3 months and then he drops another bombshell: "I applied for a job in our home state. I probably won't take it though". At this point I had talked to an admissions person for the local community college, I had a solid group of friends, a soccer team, a hobby shop I was becoming a regular at, I loved our apartment and my job was going well- I had been promoted even.
So about a month ago now, he has his weird girl-thing stay the week. I thought it was odd, but whatever. The Monday after she's gone, he tells me he got the job in our home state, and had known for two weeks but didn't want to tell me (school registration was ending during that time, which was infuriating to me). He's taking a paycut (-6k) to take this job. The job is at the college his girl-thing goes to. He's breaking the lease, doesn't want to sublet, will pay for any fees and return my half of the deposit. I look for apartments/roommates for a weekend or two but decide to just move home. I don't want to live in the state we moved to overall, I realized. My parents aren't too healthy and I want a degree in something so moving home also made sense after losing my roommate/best friend.
So impartially as possible I've relayed all the important facts above, please let me know if you'd feel wronged by this situation if it happened to you. My friends from home and from the state I had moved to are all quite upset on my behalf. As I moved out I fell into a dark state and barely could look at my friend. I feel like his motives were 100% for a girl he had legitimate problems with the first time that they dated and he has turned to her in desperation. Also I understand he didn't like it there, but he never even came close to trying to even see the surrounding area. He just gave up without trying. I feel so wronged, but if dating a girl he's already broken up with out of desperation makes him happy, should I be upset? Should I be mad he didn't make an effort to settle in? I signed a lease with him for thirteen months, and he refused to even attempt to build any sort of life. He didn't know a single person outside work besides me in our state. I moved my life for a year during a phase where I was finally getting my shit together as far as planning for my future. I feel like I've been completely abandoned, but because I wasn't paying a full half of the rent I feel like this put me in a 'beggers can't be choosers' position. Where does my happiness lose it's importance to his happiness? Any advice about this situation would be appreciated. Thanks for reading, it's a lot!
